‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ may be revived by NBC

From “Fatal Attraction” to “Prison Break” to “The X-Files” to “Fuller House,” everyone is interested these days in bringing back some of your favorite shows. Why? The best assumption we can make is at this point, it is hard to launch a brand-new concept. It’s like video games; you need to make a lot of money in order to be considered a success, and sometimes that means that you lean on established properties. This is especially true right now when it comes to network TV shows. “Empire” and “How to Get Away with Murder” were the only two commercial smash hits from the Big Four last season, and they both at least came from huge producers.

When you consider all of this, don’t be altogether surprised to know that NBC is launching a reboot for “Xena: Warrior Princess.” This was first mentions to The Hollywood Reporter, and the plan is to potentially involve original star Lucy Lawless both on-screen and off.

This project is still in the early going, so this is far from a guarantee that it will happen. All we can say with confidence is that Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi (who were both involved in the original) will be around to executive-produce the new version, and they are searching for a writer.

We definitely think that it is a good thing to get another powerful woman at the front of a TV show who kicks butt; it is also a trend at the moment in between “Supergirl” and shows like “Empire” who have a super-strong female character at the front of most of the drama. With that said, how many people were asking for this? To us, this feels like a project that would be really hard to replicate thanks to Lawless’ star power at the time and the era in which it was in.
