‘Game of Thrones’ author bummed over ‘Outlander,’ Tobias Menzies, Nick Offerman Emmy snubs
Sometimes, it’s nice to see that even a guy like George R.R. Martin is just as bummed out over some Emmy snubs as the rest of us are. On one side of the coin, he definitely has a lot to be happy about. “Game of Thrones,” which is of course based on his A Song of Ice and Fire books, received more nominations in 24 than any other show. This is also a feat that the show has accomplished in the past, though not with so many nominations overall attached to his name.
So what shows and actors is Martin upset about? He took to his Not a Blog recently and explained that he was upset about many of the same shows that we are, including “Outlander,” “Justified,” “Halt and Catch Fire,” and others:
“This truly is The Golden Age of Television, especially for drama. Game of Thrones faces the usual formidable competition for the ‘Big One,’ the award for Best Dramatic Series… but as distinguished a list as that is, there are so many incredible shows that did NOT make the cut that it boggles the mind … It’s great to see Better Call Saul and Orange Is the New Black on this list, but where is Masters of Sex? The Knick? Halt and Catch Fire? How about Vikings? I really thought Justified might make it, for its final season. And Outlander, how in the world did they overlook Outlander, with its music and its costumes and its cinematography and the incredible performances of its three leads (especially Tobias Menzies in his double role)? Why is Nick Offerman not on the ballot for Parks and Recreation? How could Big Bang Theory possibly fall off? Truly, the Academy (of which I am a member) moves in mysterious ways.”
The interesting point that Martin also mentions here is that while it is a thrill to see “Game of Thrones” get so many nominations, the series has often been shunned in winning many of the actual awards in the acting and overall series category. To date, Peter Dinklage is the only performer to win in the Actor / Supporting Actor categories. This year, he, Lena Headey, and Emilia Clarke are all nominated.
Just as we think that “Outlander” will eventually have its due (sadly, Offerman’s not going to for playing Ron Swanson), “Game of Thrones” will probably win an overall Drama Series title at some point. It’s problem for now is that it is up this year against “Mad Men” in its final season, which we consider at the moment to be the favorite. Headey is probably the one “Game of Thrones” actor with a really good shot after the events of “Mother’s Mercy.”
