‘Major Crimes’ season 4, episode 3 review: A cyber-security crisis

Tonight’s “Major Crimes” is not necessarily one that we are going to remember when it comes to long-term stories. Sure, we did get a little bit of Rusty and Raydor courtesy of what the former managed to get out of Slider last week in the Alice Herrera case, but this feels somewhat like a slow burn. Given that we are only in the third episode of the season, we feel like the producers are more than okay with buying their time here for a little while, and maybe getting to something more here down the road.

So while we find ourselves somewhat frustrated over the lack of huge reveals, there was a good bit of relevancy to the main case tonight, given that we had such themes as illegal surveillance and hacking at the center of everything. A model was found dead, and at first glance it appeared that creepy photographer Malcolm was guilty of the crime. As it turns out, he was using some software to spy on her, but he was able to prove his own innocence in part thanks to it. He’s just a creep.

Watching this case unfold eventually led to the reveal that it was the ex-boyfriend behind the death, and his actions were the result of a text message from a burner cell phone using a photo that had been snatched from her webcam. Pretty terrifying stuff, mostly because this is the sort of thing that can actually happen.

While we did have some good moments for Sanchez during this case, we cannot say that this was our favorite episode of “Major Crimes.” The case was solid, but is there anything that we will find ourselves gravitating towards near the end of the season? We doubt it. Grade: B-.
