‘Britain’s Got Talent’ review: Becky O’Brien, Côr Glanaethwy, Andrew Fleming perform
The first “Britain’s Got Talent” live show came to ITV on Monday night, it definitely put the “variety” in “variety show.” For some reason, we were ridiculously entertained by a dog popping balloons, songs we’ve already heard performed on the show, and Welsh choirs. There were times in here we thought that we were going completely batty, but as a whole, we’re just happy to say that this was a nice way to start the marathon of several live shows within the span of a single week.
Take a quick look at our view of all of the acts tonight! It’s clear to say that some are much better than others.
Entity Allstars – This is how you start a show! Really smart move giving the entire routine the “Harry Potter” theme, since we had a story from the get-go and a showcase for the dance moves. Our critique in the early going was that there was not a hefty among of substance to go along with some of what we were seeing. There was a little accident at the tail end, but it did not take away too much for us.
Billy and Emily England – The two crazy roller-skating acrobats from early this season. We loved their first audition, and we even said before this that they were one of our two favorites from the field. However, there was something that felt a little off at times about the performance. Maybe part of the problem was just the song choice, which really did not aid in adding any intensity to the piece.
Mitch and Cally the Wonderdog – For some silly reason, we were probably 100 times more entertained by watching this dog pop balloons than we really should have been. It was insane! Yet, this dog actually did break the world record for popping balloons. We had little clue how in the world there was anything else for this dog to do, but Simon Cowell claims that if Cally goes to the next round, the daughter of the World Record holder in America will come offer for a balloon-popping battle!
Henry Gallagher – At first, we were very worried that Henry performed the same exact song he did in his first appearance, but this was a really good instance of someone really elevating their first performance. We had some choreography and backing dancers! Yet, we do hope that he does something different for the finale if he returns.
Côr Glanaethwy – Stunning. We admit that we are very cynical of choirs on this show, and mostly because the bulk of them come out and do the same exact thing every season. What makes them stand out above the crowd is that there is not only a real wall of sound, but that there is such an element of culture here. They choose to perform strictly in Welsh, and give some new life to a language that has slowly faded away.
Ruby Red Performers – Did they continue to surprise? They are definitely unique, given that there are not many burlesque acts out there that are anything like them! However, we feel like the novelty is gone with them the moment that you see them perform the first time. You already know now that they are a burlesque group, and that is hard for repeat performances on this show. It doesn’t really matter who you are.
Andrew Fleming – No doubt, his impressions are great. However, this entire package was corny, over-produced, and not entirely funny. We feel like what he really needed was a venue to actually show off a singular talent, and not something that added all of the other elements to it.
Becky O’Brien – Is she the next great “BGT” singer? It was a lovely performance, but at the same time it never really took off to another level. Typically, this is a show that tends to put its most memorable acts likely to advance at the end of the show, but that is not really happening this time.
Lorraine Bowen – David Walliams’ Golden Buzzer act. It is insane. We have no clue exactly what the appeal here is; it’s almost like someone gave a five-year old kid in a 50-year old woman’s body the chance to design a performance, and this is what the idea was. Terrible, but at the same time hard to turn away from.
