‘The Late Show with David Letterman’ finale: Jerry Seinfeld, Foo Fighters, and plenty of thanks
The thing sometimes about great TV is how you take it for granted. While there have been many pioneers in late-night, David Letterman was one of the originals for his absurd brand of humor. He was a brave interviewer, sharp as a tack, and never willing to jump away from a possible laugh.
There were times when we took advantage of Dave, or dismissed the later years of “The Late Show” as being a little more predictable and a little less daring than it used to be. That may be true, but it was still fantastic. Much of the finale was spent looking back at some of his best work, which includes the Taco Bell segment, kid scientists, and some of his wackiest jokes. We also had a top ten list that featured the likes of Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Chris Rock, and many of the other best comedic talents in existence.
One of the most interesting things about the show was that it did give you at least a rare peek into Dave’s personal life. His wife Regina and son Harry made a rare appearance in the audience, and he addressed the two in a way that he never does … and also Harry’s random friend, which he found rather hilarious.
The musical guest for the night were Foo Fighters, which were a welcome inclusion into the series in that they were the first group to perform “Everlong” on the show after Letterman’s heart surgery. They performed the same song tonight, and in seeing a montage of some of Dave’s greatest moments, it made for a heck of an emotional farewell for a guy known for making us Dave.
Goodbye Dave. We’ll miss you.
