‘Chicago Fire’ season 3 spin-off ‘Chicago Med’ ordered to series alongside two others
While the NBC upfronts are not taking place until a little bit later in the month, we are at least starting to understand a little bit more of what the network wants to do for the upcoming fall season.
Apparently, at the top of the list is getting the chance to have even more of Dick Wolf’s footprint on the network. The “Chicago Fire” spin-off “Chicago Med” has been officially picked up, in many ways as we expected it to be. The backdoor pilot proved to be a commercial success story, and there was therefore not really any reason to actually push away bringing the series into the fold. We’ve heard talk that maybe it will be launched at midseason a la “Chicago PD” when it first came on the air, but that is not confirmed. This does give Wolf four shows, with “Law & Order: SVU” joining the three that are already mentioned.
Also, the network has added to their guarantees by picking up the Jaimie Alexander – Jane Doe series “Blindspot” (which has a cool premise about a woman waking up with mysterious tattoos, and no idea of the secrets they hold), and also another medical drama in “Heartbreaker.” We are a little surprised that the network is going with two different hospital series, mostly because “The Night Shift” has failed to prove itself as much of a ratings force in the spring, even in spite of airing after “The Voice.”
The full NBC schedule should be announced in the days ahead; stay tuned for that and much more from upfront season.
