‘The Blacklist’ season 2, episode 21 review: Can Reddington help Cooper with his problem?
After Liz ending up at Tom’s place last week on “The Blacklist”, there are a lot of unanswered questions between them now. Can Tom and Liz get back together? Will Tom ever stop talking about his boat? And can either of them actually trust what the other is saying? We like Tom and Liz together as end game, but what they’ve done to each other over the years is pretty messed up and it seems unlikely that they could ever really trust each other. Let’s see what the after effect of Liz’s visit to Tom was.
Tom is still pushing his boat idea (his obsession with the boat adventure just won’t quit) and after she went to Tom in a vulnerable state he thinks there’s hope of this happening. She is still saying no to running off with him, but there is a twinkle in her eye when he pre-ordered her breakfast just as she likes it. Tom is trying to reinvent himself as Jacob and asks Liz out on a date to start again as a new man, but Liz doesn’t show (to be fair she’s out on a case).
When a man named Karakurt takes out an entire subsection of the FBI, Cooper is ready to follow the lead he got from Reddington on Karakurt’s whereabouts, but Tom is there to force him to not follow the lead and send everyone on a wild goose chase away from where Karakurt actually is (but it turns out Cooper sent them into an ambush). We were hoping that Cooper would find a way to push back at Tom… so he goes to Reddington and asks for advice and Reddington suggests that he keeps his eyes open and his mouth shut so he can get information and build a case against Tom and the Kabal.
When they figure out who Karakurt’s target is (a senator), Reddington guides Cooper to tell Tom that they have the target and that the attack is already going down through Karakurt. He thinks that it will catch Tom off guard and force Tom to call off the hit on the senator, but Tom refuses. Tom gives a significant clue about the disguise the man will be in and they are able to get to the senator, but he’s already been infected with the disease the Kabal is using to kill him. So how was the virus transferred if Karakurt didn’t touch the senator? They are setting up Liz to take the fall and made her the carrier of the virus.
Liz has a lead on a Russian informant that might know more about her mother, but Reddington gets to him first. Reddington asks him if he’s talked about Katerina in the past and he says that two men from the Justice Department came looking for him about Katerina as well saying that they were asking about her child. Reddington realizes that it’s all connected to the Karakurt plot and that they are trying to frame Liz for the murder and out her as a soviet spy.
We really love Cooper and he’s gotten some really juicy material this season, especially these last few episodes. Seeing him turn to Reddington was very interesting and we weren’t sure that we were going to like this pair up working together, but we loved it. Episode grade: B-
