‘Sirens’ canceled by USA after two seasons

USA -The guillotine has fallen yet again on a USA show, and this time around, it is “Sirens” specifically who is feeling the pain of cancellation. According to Deadline, the network has ended the paramedic comedy after two seasons, with low ratings being the reason why.

“Sirens” was originally one of the first big chances that USA made as a network to get into the scripted comedy world. They had picked up “Modern Family” in syndication, and they wanted to use this in order to help other such shows as this one, “Benched,” and “Playing House.” Of these three, “Playing House” is the only one that is still on the air.

There are two things that this cancellation further proves to us:

1. This is not a great time to be a comedy at all. Networks are having a really hard time finding out that appeals to a large audience. While it is still possible to have a hit comedy (just look at “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS) it’s admittedly much more difficult in the internet age when you have everything from YouTube to standup clips to Netflix at your disposal. There are also so many comedies that have just already been done before and in a time of complete outrage by many, comedy has had to tone down some ideas leaving then lukewarm instead of edgy or biting.

2. This is also not a great time to be USA. They really burst on the scene with “Monk” and “Psych,” and we feel like their golden age was 2009. They had “Monk” ending, but also the launch of such shows as “Royal Pains” and “White Collar.” They also had “Burn Notice” going strong. While some shows have since fared decently, “Suits” is the only show since then we’d consider to be a substantial hit that sustained with good ratings. “Covert Affairs” fared well for a while, but it had a rather unfortunate cancellation.
