‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 11, episode 20 review: Is Derek dead, and are Callie and Arizona closer together?

The future -Thursday night’s new “Grey’s Anatomy” was all sorts of complicated, and we do understand that there was a whole lot more going on here than just Meredith’s constant concerns over Derek’s safety. However, there is still no doubt that this took center stage throughout most of “One Flight Down,” as she worried about what happened to her husband when he did not make it to the Washington meeting that was so important.

While she waited for news on his, we saw flashbacks to right before he left that had us crazy terrified about what in the world happened to him. We don’t think that anyone is necessarily safe on this show other than maybe Meredith, but Derek would be a huge death for the show. It would completely change Meredith’s story in a way that is hard to describe, especially after more than a decade of investment.

We won’t get too much into that speculation for now. Instead, we saw tonight some heroism from the characters dealing with plane-crash victims, and we also saw Stephanie try to do her best to help patients on an emotional level. Amelia and Owen continued to have tension between each other (at least until a beautiful moment fronted by Kevin McKidd in the end), and there was a nice Richard Webber moment to boot.

The biggest moment that came from the crash was a sense of greater understanding between Callie and Arizona. Callie taking her leg was a huge source of the friction between the two, but maybe this was a step in the right direction.

In closing, we get back to Derek, and Meredith seeing a siren through her window. Is he dead? This is something we’ll be afraid of for the next week for a number of reasons. Grade: B+.
