‘Arrow’ season 3, episode 19 review: Did someone really die in ‘Broken Arrow’?

Tonight’s new episode of “Arrow” first entered our consciousness with huge expectations. Remember here that this was one that was hyped up as having one of the most emotional moments in the history of the series, and one that really brought even Stephen Amell to a dark place. It was pretty clear that someone was going to die in “Broken Arrow” … or was it?

The great thing about this episode is that it managed to play into some of its own hype a little bit. The episode tonight did write out one of the characters in Roy Harper, but he did not die, even if it appeared that way at first. Using some help from one of Lyla’s old contacts, Diggle and Felicity worked together with Roy to ensure that he could escape from prison, even though he was presumed dead.

The problem here? It is that he cannot be seen in Starling City anymore, now that it appears that the Arrow is gone. This means that he will have to leave town, and Colton Haynes may be away from the show for some time.

Now that we’ve touched on Roy’s current situation, let’s move now to Thea, who was seemingly killed in her own right at the end of the episode. Is she really gone? We don’t think so. We see this more as a negotiation tactic for Ra’s al Ghul. He will give Thea the Lazarus Pits in return for taking on the role of Ra’s, and he will see no other choice.

There was some other excellent stuff in this episode, from Ray Palmer’s excellent battle sequence against Deathbolt (Doug Jones) to the quick Cisco appearance near the end, where it was revealed that he was actually a meta-human who was not in Central City during the particle accelerator incident. Well, doesn’t this change things greatly? With all of these twists and turns, “Broken Arrow” was a heck of an hour of TV. Grade: A-.
