‘The Walking Dead’ season 6 debate: Should Rick, Daryl’s group stay at Alexandria?

Walking Dead

Throughout the run of “The Walking Dead,” change has been a theme. The only constant is that no matter where you go, death is almost all around you. It started in the city, and then moved through Hershel’s Farm until you eventually had the prison and Woodbury. Then, you had the journey to Terminus, Father Gabriel’s church, Grady Hospital, an attempted journey to Washington, and now ultimately Alexandria. This group, led by Rick, Daryl, Michonne, and others, have traveled long and far to find a sanctuary in a world where none most likely exists.

Now that we’ve said that, we do have to take note that Alexandria may at least be the closest thing that this group has seen to a safe haven since the zombie virus first started to spread. There are fortified walls there and people who actually have some shred of their humanity left. This is what made such things as Daryl eating spaghetti such a welcome diversion. This is not something that people in this world do! Alexandria was made fun by restoring these abnormal, wild people into what we would consider relatively normalcy.

The problem is that all good things come to an end. We know the Wolves are out there, and from a storytelling perspective, “The Walking Dead” loses its edge eventually if there is not a sense of panic or despair. Therefore, the show needs stakes.

Can these stakes arrive in Alexandria? Sure, but it would take something terrible going wrong, such as internal strife or the arrival of some outsiders who come in and try to cause carnage. Typically we’re all about starting things over, but before that we could get a certain degree of emotional depth watching Alexandria crumble. It would be almost the downfall of society all over again, and show that time always wins in this world and nothing stays sacred. Would it be sad? Sure, but it is a sad show, and we’re not sure you can sell Rick wanting to bail on a place that would actually be of great benefit for the group to stay at.

Ideally, we think that another eight episodes is the ideal amount of time to stay at Alexandria, but what about you?
