‘Doctor Who’ season 9 spoilers: Maisie Williams of ‘Game of Thrones’ signs up

Doctor Who -Great news for those of you wanting to see some more familiar faces on the upcoming ninth season of “Doctor Who“: Maisie Williams has reportedly signed on! In a statement, the BBC confirmed today that the “Game of Thrones” actress is going to appear in one upcoming episode … though you’re not getting much more on her role other than the following comment from Steven Moffat:

“We’re thrilled to have Maisie Williams joining us … It’s not possible to say too much about who or what she’s playing, but she is going to challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways. This time he might just be out of his depth, and we know Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell.”

Yes, we absolutely love the notion that Williams is playing a potential villain on the show. While Arya Stark certainly has a dark, vengeful side, this is a chance to really let go and do something very different than what she has done on HBO. We would presume here that Maisie is also a “Doctor Who” fan, since it’s really hard not to be. She has previously been hinted as a possible favorite for a movie version of “The Last of Us” (which would be a perfect cast as far as we are concerned), and has become a champion of sorts among the geek community over the past few years.

Maisie is one of many “Game of Thrones” actors to find other work in genre properties. Emilia Clarke is set to be one of the leads now in “Terminator: Genisys” coming out later this year. Meanwhile, Peter Dinklage has appeared in “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and Sophie Turner has been linked to play a young Jean Grey in the upcoming movie adaptation of the comic-book franchise. Oh, and Natalie Dormer has also been a part of “The Hunger Games” franchise.

This “Doctor Who” episode will air at some point in the fall, but there’s no official date yet! “Game of Thrones,” meanwhile, will premiere on HBO April 12. Watch the latest promo here, and sign up to get some further TV updates via our CarterMatt Newsletter. (Photo: BBC.)
