Ratings: ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ rivals Seth Meyers in opening

Monday night was certainly a huge one for CBS, and for one specific reason: They had the super-daunting challenge of launching a new talk show in “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” Corden is not even close to a household name, and it is with that in mind that both we and also CBS seems to be in mutual belief that this will be more of a slow build than a sensation that happens to explode overnight.

When it comes to the early ratings, though, we would very much consider this to be a solid start for the show. “The Late Late Show” ended up drawing in total a 1.4 rating, which is up on the household average for the year, and then also up versus the same broadcast hosted by Craig Ferguson a year ago. Then again, you also expected these numbers in many ways given that this show had a whole lot more hype surrounding it than the standard episode, and it had a new host. It actually toppled “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in household rating, but then lost in the ad-friendly 18-49 demographic. Meyers has been solid and dominant ever since starting up his late-night show in this spot.

The real test for “The Late Late Show” above all else is going to be seeing just how this show manages to fare a few months from now more so than seeing how it is at this particular moment. We certainly all expected it to do well in its first outing, and the majority of the reviews are positive. The struggle for any late-night show from here is finding a way to sustain.

One thing that Corden will need to figure out right away? How to make videos go viral. This is becoming more and more important with so much competition in late-night.
