Emmys 2015: Will ‘True Detective’ season 2 be impacted by new rules?

Times are changing over at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences when it comes to what they will classify as a miniseries moving forward, and there are many shows that this could up impacting for future Emmy Awards.

Recently, we wrote a piece detailing how much trouble “Fargo” was going to have moving forward trying to submit as a Limited Series, which is the new word the awards show is going for in the place of Miniseries. Why? New rules stipulate that Limited Series may not have any sort of recurring storyline, or feature characters from another season / stretch of episodes. Since “Fargo” season 2 is basically a prequel, neither it nor “American Horror Story” will be able to fly there.

With this being said, “True Detective” season 2 is in a bit murkier waters. Based on what we’ve heard so far, the story for this show is going to be completely separate from what we saw the first time around with Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. It’s long enough to be a Limited Series, so that option may be there.

Despite all of this, we still feel like HBO will submit season 2 as a drama, which they will not even be able to do until the 2016 show anyway. (“True Detective” is not returning before the cutoff date for the 2015 show.) They are confident enough that it can win some awards in the Drama Category (they were in season 1), and you also have to remember here that this is a network that could benefit mightily from putting other Limited Series in that category. HBO typically cleans up there and in TV Movies, even if “Fargo” won Miniseries this past year.
