‘Law & Order’ (the original) by be revived by NBC as limited series

File this under “news we did not see coming”: NBC may actually be looking to give “Law & Order” another go a few years after canceling the flagship show. The twist? It would not necessarily be the series exactly as we remember it.

Per Deadline, the network has considered bringing back the legendary show as a ten-episode limited series at some point moving forward, and has even reached out to Chris Noth, Sam Waterston, and some of the other actors who were iconic parts of the franchise for many years. In getting this show off of the ground again, NBC would be accomplishing a variety of different things at once.

1. “Law & Order” would break the tie with “Gunsmoke,” and have the honor of being the longest-running primetime drama series in history.

2. The series never received much of a proper ending after those two decades, and was canceled almost suddenly. We know that many a fan were not altogether pleased by the way things went down the first time, and everyone wants to have a genuine shot at redemption.

3. “Law & Order” would bring the total number of Dick Wolf shows on the network to four, which makes him the most prolific executive producer out there right now for dramas. Shonda Rhimes and Greg Berlanti are right now two of the other drama uber-producers who are out there. If “Chicago Med” gets picked up along with this, it would bring his total to five.

If this does happen, we just hope that it is a format where we get maybe just one case or two that last over the course of ten episodes, given that we are getting such a limited run. It would be fun to see the show take on that sort of format.
