‘Red Band Society’ finale spoilers: Watch promo for final two episodes!
Sometimes, we wish that there was a platform out there to allow promising shows at least two seasons to find themselves. Maybe you do something like make the first season available to streaming providers early, or at least take a financial risk early to see if something great comes later. While not every show deserves a second chance (looking at you, “Mulaney”), Fox’s “Red Band Society” clearly does.
This is a series that started off a little rocky in our opinion, but we feel that part of the reason for that was that it had the challenge of trying to introduce an enormous array of characters in a very short period of time. Anytime that you really attempt anything even remotely that ambitious, there are going to be issues and inconsistencies. Most of these leveled off in the weeks to come, and by around episode seven or eight we had a warm, touching show with humor, heart, but also a little sadness. The setting and the tone made it different than almost anything else on TV.
These are themes you will once again see this weekend as the show prepares to say goodbye. We’re not entirely sure why Fox is not really promoting it even as a season finale, let alone a series-ender. They’re just not doing either thing!
Ultimately, what we can tell you is that there is going to be one extremely sad departure that takes place during these two hours that lie ahead Saturday. This will likely lead to a few years, but the one thing that we can still tell you is that there will be some hope for others. Like a show in “Parenthood” that we felt in times had at least some similarities, we don’t get the sense that “Red Band Society” wants to send you out depressed.
