‘Gotham,’ ‘Empire’ season 2 on Fox official; ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ also renewed
Fox wasted little time at its TCA event Saturday announcing some big renewals … though we cannot say that we are shocked by any of them.
The biggest achievement for the network of the year is the hip-hop drama “Empire,” so we cannot quite say that we are stunned speechless to learn that the Taraji P. Henson – Terence Howard series is going to be back for a second season after only two episodes on the air. Even if it loses half of its recent 4.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic, it is still a big hit for the network. That is an indictment both on the show’s success, and also how terrible Fox seems to be doing everywhere else on their schedule.
Meanwhile, the news was also great for “Gotham.” This has been a consistent hit for Fox throughout the season, and it has maintained much of its viewership throughout the season. It didn’t debut with a number as big as “Empire,” but the stage is set for us to be seeing much more of James Gordon on the network for years to come.
Finally, we turn to “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” the only live-action comedy now to have a renewal for next season. It has seen its ratings increase in season 2 thanks in part to it airing on Sunday nights, and it is still creatively extremely strong.
There are still question marks surrounding some of the other network shows, including “Sleepy Hollow,” “Bones,” and “New Girl,” but these three in particular should be back for more, depending on how much time Emily and Zooey Deschanel need off with the latter shows following their pregnancies.
