‘The Mentalist’ season 7 spoilers: Status of Rigsby – Van Pelt return still a mystery

Even though Sunday night marks the return of “The Mentalist” for its seventh and likely final season, there is still one mystery that has us a little unnerved: Whether or not Rigsby and Van Pelt are going to be around for at least one more story.

We realize that neither Owain Yeoman nor Amanda Righetti are series regulars on the show anymore, it would feel a little like a missed opportunity to shun two of the show’s most-notable supporting characters for many years within these final thirteen episodes. While there may be other stories to tell, couldn’t you include them in at least one of them?

Speaking to TV Guide, all executive producer Tom Szentgyorgyi would say right now is that he cannot give any further information:

“They were a huge part of the show, [but] I have no teasers to offer on that front.”

Maybe the two just are not going to be around, or maybe it is meant to be a surprise appearance later. Right now, we’re going into this almost with the same sort of mindset that we had about “The Mentalist” potentially getting renewed in the first place: We are going to expect the worst, but who knows? Maybe an appearance will happen and we will have something to be pleasantly surprised about. Stranger things have happened.

For now, though, we would just advise you to prepare for what we know for sure is coming in the season 7 premiere, and that includes an opportunity to see Jane and Lisbon as a couple, a new agent in Michelle Vega, and hopefully some interesting cases that take the characters to new places.
