‘Gotham’ spoilers: Series boss on plans to slow down with number of villains
If there is one thing that we have quickly noticed about “Gotham” this season, it is that there are villains, and a number of them have popped up very quickly. This, in turn, has led to a whole lot of criticism on a variety of different topics … including if the villains are too old, and if all of the good characters are getting unveiled too quickly.
What would the show’s executive producer have to say about this? Well, Bruno Heller tells Entertainment Weekly that it was almost necessary to give you little tastes of so many people to hook viewers in; now, they plan to slow some things down:
“We front-loaded [the show with iconic characters], which we had to do, both for story purposes and marketing purposes. We had to let people know it’s not just a hum-drum police procedural, it’s about these larger-than-life characters. If you do that you can’t just say, ‘Here’s one larger-than-life character, now wait for next season.’ Once we introduced those initial characters—Penguin, Riddler, Ivy, Selina—then we slowed down with those aspects and we’re bringing in those iconic D.C characters in a much more measured way, which was always the intention. You have to have that amount of spice in the show to make it pop and different. Once the wheels are turning, it’s much easier to bring those characters in in subtle, organic ways. That’s the plan, anyway.”
We do feel like there are some other villains out there who can be introduced at some point, such as the Joker, Killer Croc, Bane, Black Mask, or many others. With that being said, we don’t really want to see all of them there. It doesn’t make sense that they would all be in Gotham right now; also, not every villain needs to be older than Bruce Wayne.
