‘The Walking Dead’ season 5, episode 6 reaction: Melissa McBride on Carol, Daryl, and passionate fans
If you love Carol and Daryl on “The Walking Dead,” or the ‘ship that affectionately refers to itself as “Caryl,” then odds are that you probably loved this past episode. It was one of our personal favorites of the entire series, since it allowed for these two characters, played by Melissa McBride and Norman Reedus, to bond as they tried to uncover just where Beth (Emily Kinney) was located. Eventually, they figured it out, but not before Carol needed to be hospitalized herself.
While of course the cast is mum on the upcoming final two episodes of the show, McBride did a post-episode interview with Entertainment Weekly that did touch on a number of important things … including what her reaction is to the most part to the sheer passion that many fans of this couple have:
“Yeah, I get it from a fan point of view. I get it. But there is a certain part of that fandom that reads a lot of the fan fiction, and fan fiction goes there. I’ve read one fan fiction ever, and it was very lovely and sweet. It wasn’t the smutty stuff. But I’ve heard about it. It’s fun though. But there are so many ships — so many ships sailing. They’re going to conk into one another, and it can get a little nasty and that kind of makes me sad. They can get nasty to one another. It’s just a TV show. No need to get nasty to each other. Especially because nothing has happened.”
The reality is that most fandoms are fun, and then there are a select few that get a little out of control. It’s basically like anything else, with the reality being that the few who are out of control tend to be some of the most vocal.
