‘The Walking Dead’ season 5 spoilers: Robert Kirkman on the big Maggie, Beth question

While season 5 of “The Walking Dead” has been fairly strong, there is still a question that has hung over much of it ever since Maggie (Lauren Cohan) made the decision to go off with Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) and his crew: Why on earth would she do that? Rather than join Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and his team on a mission to save her sister Beth (Emily Kinney), she is instead on a fruitless mission to go to Washington DC for a cure that did not actually exist.

So why hasn’t Maggie at least grieved, even if she didn’t want to go look for her? Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview, comic writer Robert Kirkman suggests first and foremost that Maggie may already be accepting the worst for Beth, while also explaining that the nature of her situation does not yield for a lot of time to sit down and process your emotions:

“You can also complain that Maggie hasn’t expressed too much loss over Hershel just because we haven’t spent a great many scenes talking about the loss of her father … There’s been so much other stuff going on that this character is dealing that there hasn’t been an opening where she would sit down and say, ‘Oh my gosh, she’s still out there. What can we do?'”

Even if Maggie is not a part of the search party, we at least know that one is out there for Maggie, and may be executing a plan at this very moment. It all depends on how you interpret Carol’s arrival in the hospital, and that will probably be explained Sunday night (you can watch a preview for this episode here).

Even in spite of Kirkman’s explanation, it is ultimately still up to you as to whether or not you believe Maggie should really be neglecting this mission in the way that she is.
