‘The Originals’ season 2 spoilers: Elijah’s weakness in Nina Dobrev – Tatia story

Elijah -Tonight, “The Originals” airs a new episode in “Red Door” that may be one of the most important in the entire series. While you will have a little bit of backstory when it comes to Klaus in the form of Tatia, Esther’s plan in reintroducing the subject of Nina Dobrev’s character in a way tonight is more to manipulate Elijah. This is a man who has the potential to unravel, where we are not so sure that Klaus was even ever together in the first place.

So why exactly is Daniel Gillies’ character the way that he is? Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Michael Narducci explains that Elijah’s sense of honor is in a way his biggest flaw, and this is something that Esther is going to try to exploit:

“[Elijah] doesn’t like other vampires … He’s fallen in love with Katherine, and he’s had moments where he’s respected certain other vampires. But when he saw Elena in Vampire Diaries, he said how much she reminded him of the goodness of being human. And in episode 16 last year, [when] Klaus and Elijah are at each other’s throats, Klaus says, ‘You wear a mask of civility when we both know you are just as bad as I am, if not worse.’ The notion is that Elijah hates being a vampire, but his defense mechanism is to dress it up and to have a code—not just a suit and a handkerchief, but a code of honor. That’s why he says, ‘I give you my word,’ and he keeps it. ‘There are certain rules. And if I cling to those rules and if I believe in them fundamentally, then I can endure this existence as a creature that feeds on the blood of other creatures.’ And that’s kind of his blind spot. His weakness.”

All we would say for now is that if you’re not worried about Elijah going into “Red Door,” you really should be. This could end up being one of the most important episodes for the character yet by the time it concludes.
