‘Gracepoint’ episode 3 review: Anna Gunn, David Tennant create tension

Some fans of the original series “Broadchurch” are still divided on “Gracepoint”, but for us (who has never seen “Broadchurch”) we have really been enjoying the series so far. David Tennant was part of “Broadchurch”, so for those of you who have watched both shows you get an extra double does of the man who brought us many years of joy on “Doctor Who” (it’s impossible not to love this man). Anna Gunn is someone we loved to watch on “Breaking Bad” and together this team has just felt right for all the wrong reasons.

Emmett is convinced that Mark (Danny’s father) is the prime suspect in Danny’s murder after he lied to him about his whereabouts the night Danny died, his finger prints were at the scene of the crime and the fact that he owns a boat that has some of Danny’s blood in it, but Ellie is not so quick to jump to the same conclusion and arrest him.

Mark’s alibi’s are falling apart quite quickly as his alibi Vince stumbles and the “job” he said he did at the crime scene (before Danny died) is also a lie. When they ask him about the Danny’s blood found in his boat it’s enough for Emmett to arrest him. When Gemma comes forward and says that she had sex with Mark the night Danny died, he’s cleared with the alibi, but the secret could destroy his marriage if it comes out – not a good time since Beth is pregnant and still hasn’t told him. Beth sees Gemma and Mark kissing and now the truth is out there, but what will she do with the information?

Ellie’s son, Tom, is interviewed by Emmett and it was nice to see a softer side of him as he asked him some pretty tough questions and got some good answers out of him, including that Danny told him that his dad, Mark, had hit him a few times.

Watching the intensity between Anna Gunn and David Tennant’s characters is a lot of fun. Even though these two  do not get along and can’t seem to agree on pretty much anything, they always end up finding their way back to the same conclusions. We are hooked. Episode grade: B+
