NBC’s ‘The Voice’ preview: Hear Matt McAndrew perform ‘A Thousand Years’

At this point in “The Voice,” we are constantly concerned about whether or not there is enough talent to really impress us.

Luckily, thanks to Matt McAndrew, we’re not nearly as worried about that. This may be one of our favorite auditions of the season. We’ve heard “A Thousand Years” a few times now as an audition song on some of these shows, but there is just such a genuine quality in the way that he sings it. We believe him, and this song can come across as corny if performed by someone just trying to do it well for a talent competition. There are a couple of weird notes near the end of the performance, but we attribute it to both nerves and excitement over getting everyone other than Gwen Stefani turning around.

So who is Matt going to choose as his coach of the three? We feel like all of them bring something to the table. Adam Levine is probably the closest to him musically, but we’re not sure that is really the right choice. Blake Shelton actually is the best storyteller of the coaches when it comes to the music he performs, and while he’s in a different genre than Matt, he does know how to convey his emotions into a song. Just look at some of his ballads.

Ultimately, though, the editing of this performance makes Pharrell look like a favorite, mostly because his speech to him was probably the most passionate out of any we see here.
