‘Downton Abbey’ season 5 spoilers: Brendan Coyle teases upcoming story
Throughout most of the first two episodes of “Downton Abbey,” it actually appeared as though maybe things were turning around when it comes to Mr. Bates. There was little talk at all about Mr. Green or what happened to him … at least at first.
This changed near the end of the second episode on Sunday, when it was revealed that there was an apparent witness to what may have happened when Bates took his “trip into the city.” Want to hear more? Then just take a look at what Brendan Coyle had to say in a new interview with the Mirror about how things were going leading up to this big reveal:
“Julian never fails to drop your jaw. We couldn’t begin the series with that storyline. We had to have some abatement from that. And there’s a sense of them trying to heal. But it’s very difficult.”
All we don’t want to see at the moment is Bates go back to prison, mostly because the show has already traveled down this road once, and there is really only so much that can be gained from doing it again. At the same time, however, there are some reasons to be concerned here. Plus, shouldn’t we want Bates to be arrested if he did kill a man? Obviously, the debate here if he is guilty of killing Green is whether or not he was justified in his actions, based on what the footman did to Anna back during the performance last season.

Green was a valet, not a footman. Who ever heard of someone travelling with his footman?

Mrs. Hughes or Lady Mary did it.
