ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 4 spoilers: Portia de Rossi on taking on mysterious role

“Scandal” is a show that loves its secrets, and at the moment there is no bigger secret than who Portia de Rossi will be playing. What we know for now is that the former “Better Off Ted” star has a big role in the fourth season, and it is something that was hyped from the moment that her wife Ellen DeGeneres first made this public.

So what does Portia have to say herself about it? While she has been pretty quiet to date, she explained recently in a new issue of Entertainment Weekly that “when a genius like Shonda Rhimes asks you to play a role on your favorite TV show, you say yes.” As for who she is playing, Portia said merely that her character is a “powerful woman.” That is not very much of a substantial tease, but it is an important one. This to us suggests that maybe she is someone who hires Olivia Pope and Associates, or maybe she is someone who collides against them and the two parties battle it out. Either way, there is potential here for some interesting storytelling.

One thing to remember while you speculate is that early scuttlebutt has been that season 4 will take on a slightly more procedural role than what you have seen on the show lately. There will still be that whole serialized component and longer stories, but the tone may feel a little closer at times to the second season than what you necessarily saw during the third.
