‘The Following’ season 3 undergoing creative shakeup; showrunner exits
Even though “The Following” season 3 has yet to even premiere, or even get that close to it, there are still some significant changes happening behind the scenes.
According to a brand-new report coming in right from Deadline, “Lost” alum Jennifer Johnson is exiting the show after just a couple of months at the job. She will remain at the Warner Bros. studio, while Kevin Williamson (who oversees everything while balancing numerous projects) has decided to promote Brett Mahoney and Alexi Hawley as the new showrunners for Kevin Bacon and company.
The report claims that it was ultimately creative differences that caused this change, and that may be troubling to many already given the number of “creative differences” that this show has already struggled with. For example, the first and second halves of season 2 felt like two separate shows, and we struggle to really get the impression that there is a consistent vision here most of the time, other than that Ryan Hardy is the main character and that there are very bad people out there.
What we do know right now is that season 3 will presumably pick up with Ryan in a reasonable position in his life. He is going to be in a relationship with a new woman, and he is becoming a father-of-sorts to her daughter. This is a whole new level of responsibility for him, and with that, we presume that he will have to figure out how to balance home life with being an obsessive freelancer desperately trying to track down killers.
