‘Masters of Sex,’ ‘Ray Donovan’ season 3 official; Showtime renews both series
Great news for those who are particularly impatient, and also excited to see more of “Ray Donovan” and also “Masters of Sex” on Showtime: The network has officially renewed both series now for additional seasons.
This announcement was made official on Wednesday morning, and the network head David Nevins had the following to say about it:
“Both Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex are quintessentially Showtime: bold, provocative, premium television with production values at the top of the food chain.”
We certainly cannot expect this renewal being a shocking announcement for anyone who follows the two series. While they do not have the benefit anymore of a lead-in like “Dexter” or “Homeland,” the ratings have been decent for premium cable this summer. Not only that, but Showtime kind of has to press forward with the programming that they have to keep subscribers right now. While “Penny Dreadful” was successful to a certain degree, they have still yet to find that “Dexter” replacement that sets their meters ablaze and gets people talking on that level. (That is probably why those rumors of a spin-off are not going away just yet.)
In the end, we definitely expect these shows to each make it to a season 4, but for “Masters of Sex” in particular, we have a hard time seeing it having an enormously long shelf life. The issue with a series like this is strictly that there is only so much story that can be told of a true-life tale, and eventually, they are going to run out of material unless they start to make a few things up.
