‘Downton Abbey’ season 5 spoilers: Allen Leech on Branson’s new struggle
Tom Branson took a little time to find his footing on “Downton Abbey” season 4 following the death of Sybil, but we are now seeing the character in an interesting place. Not only does he potentially have a new love in his life, but he is starting to explore more of his socialist ideals alongside what sort of man he has become.
Just as you would expect, these themes will continue prominently in season 5, as he also continues to find his place as a non-rich-man living within the upper class by a marriage that is now unfortunately over. Allen Leech explained this further at the show’s press day, where he said the following to the Independent:
“We see the blurring of these lines between the classes, and of course the first socialist government comes into power, which Branson is delighted about … For the first time, Branson has an opportunity to see change from the inside out. [Tom must decide] not only where he sits within the class system, but what kind of man he wants to be and what kind of father he wants to be for his daughter.”
That is a lot for him to figure out, but the good thing about his present situation is that the majority of those at Downton are not deterring him in the slightest. So far, the only thing that he has really run into that is even remotely problematic is him having a woman upstairs when this was against the “rules” of the time.
