‘Masters of Sex’ season 2, episode 5 review: Sarah Silverman shakes things up
There was a lot going on last week on “Masters of Sex”. We saw Bill not only get fired from his job at the new hospital, but also get a new job at another hospital where Virginia is welcomed as his research assistant. If that happens, will Bill and Virginia continue their “private” research?
Bill gives Virginia an opportunity to come back on board of the study, but she wants the specifics in writing because she doesn’t trust that the job is secure. She tries to tell Bill that she has other opportunities with Lillian, but Bill clues her in on the fact that Lillian knows about Bill and Virginia’s affair and doesn’t have the respect for her that she thought she had.
Virginia confronts Lillian saying that she and Bill are participating in the study and that it’s not an affair. Lillian argues that it is an affair and Virginia calls her out on giving away the study to spite her because of her personal life. No matter their fight, Virginia still takes Lillian to her cancer treatments and they find a way to work things out.
Bill gets the contract for Virginia, and before she signs she talks to Bill about not continuing their personal involvement and asks if it is part of her employment and he says it is. She ends up agreeing and accepts the job. Transition to the new hospital has not been smooth as the integration of white and black patients together sparks problems, but after receiving the pep talk of a life time from the head of the hospital we have hope for the future… that is until we see that he is pulling down the signs for Bill’s study and trashing them.
Libby has made her feelings clear about how she feels Bill is handling his career and with his new job at an all black hospital she feels that his career is “rolling down hill”. Libby’s treatment of Coral is also catching up to her as her boyfriend, Robert, stands up for Coral and Libby’s forcing her to wash her hair. She talks to Bill about Robert and Coral and Bill backs Coral saying that if someone had tried to do that to Libby he wouldn’t stand for it. She apologizes to Robert about her actions towards Coral, but Robert tells Libby that Coral should be the one to receive the apology leaving Libby upset once again.
Betty and Gene have worked past his anger of being lied to and are considering adoption. Also we were introduced to Helen, (Sarah Silverman) a woman that Betty jilted. Betty tells Helen that she wants her out of her life, but when she has a chance to date Gene’s friend it looks like Helen won’t be leaving that easily. Instead of being honest about Helen, she tries to make excuses to push her out, but Gene isn’t having it. This leads to them spending more time together, sharing a moment and a kiss.
We have never made it a secret of how much we love Sarah Silverman, but we honestly have to say that we were blown away by her performance in this episode and can’t wait to see how her role plays out on the show. Episode grade: B +
