‘Masters of Sex’ season 2, episode 5 preview: Libby makes her true feelings known

As if things were not awkward enough between Libby and Virginia on “Masters of Sex,” the subject of Bill’s career comes into the mix as well in the sneak peek from Sunday night’s new episode.

Why is Libby so upset? It really comes down to the fact that she finds it embarrassing that her husband has gone from being a prestigious head at a university hospital to working in a lesser position at a black establishment. There is obviously a tinge of racism in these comments, and also some commentary of the social structures that existed at this time. Financially, Bill is taking a sizable cut for the purposes of joining this study, and there are also potentially other consequences that come with a white doctor working at a black hospital. Libby is a product of her time, which was littered with racism and segregation. Many other characters will see it the same way.

However, Victoria is quite different than most, given that she sees the higher calling of what Bill is doing, regardless of where he works. That part of this conversation is admirable. The part that is not is the fact that she and Dr. Masters are carrying on an illicit affair without Libby’s knowledge. This is the chief complication of the series right now, and why it remains so difficult to pick and choose just who among the characters you truly are able to root for.

By the end of this episode, maybe there will be progress and answers … but that is not guaranteed by any means.
