‘The Big Bang Theory’ season 8 spoilers: A new job for Kaley Cuoco’s Penny
Has Penny on “The Big Bang Theory” given up on her acting dreams? We wouldn’t necessarily say that just yet, but she is going to find a new job that will pull her away from the world of auditions for at least a time.
Speaking at the TCA Summer Press Tour recently per The Hollywood Reporter, show co-creator Chuck Lorre confirmed that an opportunity is going to come up within the world of sales, and for the first time really ever on the show, she is going to start to understand what it means to actually be successful:
“Penny has an interesting arc this year where she puts acting down … She gets a shot to be a pharmaceutical rep at Bernadette’s [Melissa Rauch] company.
“She’s going to start making some money, which will unbalance their relationship as the power shifts. She’s going to find some confidence and self-esteem, which acting does not provide in great heaping doses.”
Do we love this story? In all honesty, we’re torn over it. We liked the idea of Penny starting to get closer and closer to actually making her acting dream a reality, and other than her getting a chance to spend more screen time with Melissa Rauch, there is not a whole lot that is different about this storyline that she would not have been able to do if she had landed a more successful acting gig. We do think that it will happen by the time the series is over, but maybe the show is not too interested in showing what happens when Penny is actually well-known.
One thing that we are still waiting for just so that this story can happen at all is for the contract situation on the show to be worked out. Kaley Cuoco is one of the cast members right now in deep discussions on a new deal to significantly increase her pay, and we’ll have to find out where that goes in the coming weeks.
