‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 2: ABC boss confident about show’s future
Remember when Marvel’s “Agents of SHIELD” debuted to those astronomical numbers back during the first season? Those really were the days, but the problem was that those ratings were for some of the show’s worst episodes. Had the series premiered to the quality that we saw in the spring (this is playing the what-if game, we know), we imagine that this would still have “major hit” status written all over it rather than just a solid entry into the ABC lineup.
Luckily, it does still seem like the network is not only very much on board the series still, but they recognize the high level of quality that they have reached. ABC head Paul Lee basically said as much while at TCA this morning for his annual presentation:
“It took time to find our sea legs, but once we did… it brought a whole load of creativity to our back 9 [episodes in the spring]. [What happened at the end of season 1] triggered a whole lot of storylines that we’re reading at the moment, and I’m loving those scripts. I feel good.”
We are feeling better about the show than we once did, though the major thing that we wish, however, impossible it may be, is that the show somehow found a way to bring back some of those viewers who were once here. They’ll probably have to either hear about it via word-of-mouth, or that the show stays good enough for a long time that eventually some new people start to come on board.
