‘Teen Wolf’ season 4, episode 1 review: Meet the new Derek, same as the old Derek?
For its season 4 premiere, “Teen Wolf” started things off by doing something that we definitely appreciated: Getting the gang out of Beacon Hills and the high school. We know that this a part of the fabric of the show, but we’re starting to have a very hard time trying to buy some of these people as students. Heck, we felt this way years ago.
Scott and company took off to Mexico this week with a major goal, and that was to try to find Derek. What they found was something far worse and unexpected. The layers of the Kate Argent mystery started to unravel throughout the episode, as it was explored how she could be possibly still alive despite everything that happened in the show’s early days.
As for Derek, the good news is that he was ultimately discovered … but the bad news? Let’s just say that this is not exactly the same Derek that we came to know at the end of last season. He’s a somewhat different beast, and that seems to continue along the show’s unusual tradition of deciding to introduce some sort of new monster every season.
We at least feel like if you love “Teen Wolf,” you probably enjoyed the premiere. The “new Derek” shocker at the end is a game-changer, but it is a little bit early to figure out what a younger version of the character really means. For now, we’ll just pick up our jaw off of the floor and prepare for what comes next. Grade: B-.
