TV Quick Hits: John Oliver, NBA stars read ‘mean tweets,’ and Powerpuff Girls return

Last Week Tonight -There could not be three more different stories in this edition of TV Quick Hits if we even tried, and we’re going to start things off with John Oliver proving once again why he was worthy of his own show on HBO.

Oliver vs. Washington Football – Are Oliver’s opinions often slanted? Certainly, but he often does a commendable job packing them up with facts, comparisons, and information. There is no better example of this than the latest video from “Last Week Tonight,” where he tears into the Washington football franchise over its use of a derogatory term in its team nickname.

There is a lot of comedy in here, but also a few things that may actually make you think about your position on this issue one way or another. This also shows yet again Oliver’s willingness to cover a variety of topics, given that he has taken on everything from net neutrality to FIFA to the Indian elections over the course of the series’ run so far. During this episode, he also went at immigration reform.

NBA stars read “Mean Tweets” – These are always fun no matter who does them, but this “NBA Stars” edition is particularly enjoyable to us … especially the lines that come in about Paul George and Dikembe Motumbo. Good stuff all around here. Plus, it’s a good thing that Jimmy Kimmel put this on yesterday’s show given that the San Antonio Spurs won the NBA title.

The Powerpuff Girls return – Now to something completely different. Remember the likes of Bubbles, Buttercup, and Blossom? Well, they are going to be returning for a new Cartoon Network series in 2016. This is great news for a new generation, and parents may be convinced to even watch with them given their own history watching the show.
