‘Saturday Night Live’: Lorne Michaels promises changes ahead of next season

SNL -

Was this past season of “Saturday Night Live” a great one? We do not know a single person who would describe it as such. We wouldn’t say it was a terrible season on the level that many others have, but there were some definite weak links. Taran Killam and Bobby Moynihan were absent for long stretches during shows, Colin Jost had an uneven start on “Weekend Update,” and we’d say that only two of the new cast members in Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett really stood out.

So with all of this in mind, you really should not be too stunned that the series is going to be looking to shake things up a little. Speaking to Deadline, boss Lorne Michaels promised that there are going to be some changes coming into the upcoming season. We feel like John Milhiser (who we still barely even recognize) is for sure on the chopping block, and Brooks Whelan and Noel Wells should also be feeling a little nervous. Nasim Pedrad is likely gone to work on her new “Mulaney” sitcom, and while Mike O’Brien didn’t kill it in his first year on the show, we feel like he did just enough to stick around.

If there are three or four departures this summer, we’d personally be okay if only one or two new featured players are cast. Rather than have an enormous crop of people to the point where some are barely seen, we’d rather focus in on the artists who we know for sure can deliver. Given that Lorne himself claims that this past year was a “hard” season, it is probably fare to say that there are major changes ahead.
