‘Reign’ finale reaction: Is Mary’s game of thrones complete?
Tonight, The CW had quite a night when it comes to finales. First, they unleashed a mountain of a shocker on “The Vampire Diaries” that we are not going to spoil here for anyone. Then, we also had the first season finale of “Reign” that featured Mary finally showing that she can move mountains.
While most CW shows these days have a sort of hero element to him when it comes to them, “Reign’s” has been a little more underneath the surface but still very much there. The only difference is that Mary doesn’t need a mask, and she can hold her power with words rather than beating up a variety of different people. She ascended to the throne properly in the finale, strengthened by everything from death to despair. This was perhaps the ending that this show needed to set up that the second season would have even higher stakes. It didn’t feel shocking compared to the end of “The Vampire Diaries,” but in the end, very few things can.
So is it really a problem at all that the show does not always get the history right? We never really felt that this was the point, and if we are going to criticize it for dramatizing events, then you have to do the same thing to Showtime’s “Masters of Sex” and many other properties. Maybe viewers do inevitably learn a thing or two in the process of watching the show play out, but that’s not really the point. This is about entertainment, and we imagine that those who watch “Regin” for that were probably entertained tonight.
