‘Person of Interest’ season 3 finale review: Rise of the machines

The latest -Person of Interest” could have gone a variety of different ways with how they chose to end their third season on Tuesday night, but they ultimately decided to turn this tale of machines into something that was extremely grim. Is this the most depressing finale of this season? It has good competition for that thanks to the end of “Castle” season 6, but it certainly has to be in the conversation.

The depressing part of this episode came via the very fact that no longer are we looking at the situation anymore where there is a Machine for a helper. Instead, we have more of a situation where a new machine is now the villain. Quite a terrifying way to end things, no? There’s now a definitive new enemy, and something that Root and company in particular are going to have a hard time stop.

The other cliffhanger for now is simply trying to get the group to reassemble in time to busy out some of that old-school heroism, and we also had a death as Hersh is no longer among the living. Given the stunning death of Taraji P. Henson that happened earlier this season, we were a little more prepared to handle this one. Still, it only added to the grim outlook on things.

The truth here is that “Person of Interest” never advertised nor wanted to be the sort of show where everything worked out perfectly all the time. Instead, it is the sort of show that tends to frequently operate in a state of chaos. We’ve now seen what could be the worst of times for the characters, and now, we have to hope for a turnaround. Grade: B.
