‘Game of Thrones’ season 4, episode 6 preview: Liam Cunningham on Mark Gatiss appearance
Every episode of “Game of Thrones” is a big one, but Sunday night’s “The Laws of Gods and Men” may actually be more significant than most. This is an opportunity for us to really see a little bit more of someone who could be very important to the Stannis Baratheon storyline: A face to go along with the Iron Bank.
Stannis and Davos have an opportunity to use the bank in order to destroy the Lannister family, thanks largely to all the money that the family owes right now stemming from the Royal Wedding and all of their battling. They may always pay their debts, but nobody said that they were going to do so in a swift manner.
While most details regarding just what Gatiss’ character will do on the show are unclear, Liam Cunningham (who plays Davos) gave a tiny explanation of what it was like working with the “Sherlock” writer / actor in an “Access Hollywood” interview:
“He’s a hugely talented guy and he’s an absolute delight … He’s a fantastic actor. … So to be in a scene with him was an absolute joy, an absolutely a privilege.”
Cunningham also teased the following when it comes to setting up the arrival of the bank on the show, and also comparing them to some institutions in the real world:
“There’s a eureka moment, with lovely Shireen, where the bank of Braavos is involved. … Stannis quite rightly says, ‘Who have we got on our side?’ and I point out a couple of the banner families, and he basically looks at me and goes, ‘That’s it? You need to redouble your efforts.’ However, with very little to go on, we’ve lost everything. We’ve lost… 30 ships that we got off Salladhor Saan. Our coffers are extremely diminished, so the only way to do this is to go to the people who finance the Lannisters, who are financing King’s Landing, and that involves getting in touch, somehow or other, with the big guns, with the Lehmans. … as in the bank that went bang here. Lehman Brothers. Goldman Sachs. That’s actually who we’re gonna have to go and see. Something’s gotta be done, so we’ll have to talk to the powers that be in Braavos, which is, of course, going to be one of the most impressive sights that we’ve seen on this show, and we’ve never seen it before.”
All of this to us is just further evidence that we are going to get a very great episode of the show soon. You can see some photos about it (especially when it comes to Tyrion’s trial) over at the link here. Also, sign up now if you want to get other updates courtesy of our CarterMatt Newsletter.
