‘Grey’s Anatomy’ alum Katherine Heigl’s new NBC show picked up

It looks like Katherine Heigl is now officially returning to TV, and in a pretty big way.

The network confirmed on Tuesday that they have picked up “State of Affairs,” a series that Heigl has been developing for most of the season to be a vehicle for her in the vein of “Homeland,” “Scandal,” and “Covert Affairs.” The show focuses on her as a key person in the CIA who informs the President on key decisions and incidents that occur around the world. In addition to that, though, she also has to balance a personal life that is almost constantly complicated.

So what do we think about the premise? For now, the answer to that is “meh.” There is not exactly anything that we find particularly great or revolutionary about this, since it has been done many times already on many different networks. The show is mostly going to have to rely on Heigl’s name to get viewers, and it is hard to say how big that is at this point. We’re not going to attack her for getting another show, regardless of what happened with “Grey’s Anatomy.” We feel like someone in her position is worthy of a second chance, and now it’s up to the viewers to decide whether or not they want to buy into it.

NBC will have a few holes to fill for this upcoming season, as “Revolution” is surely canceled, and there will be further holes come midseason. The largest question marks are in regards to “Hannibal” and “Law & Order: SVU,” which are both sitting firmly on the bubble for the time being.
