‘The X Factor’ alum Fifth Harmony, One Direction, Demi Lovato score Radio Disney Awards
While “The X Factor” may not be in the air in the United States anymore, at least one of its alumni picked up a notable honor today: Breakout Artist of the Year at the Radio Disney Awards! If nothing else, it’s proof of the Harmonizers’ strength as a fan following, and a reminder that they still have momentum months after their “Better Together” EP first came out in stores. (The group also won the award for Best Song to Rock Out with Your BFF To in “Me & My Girls.”)
Fifth Harmony are not the only act affiliated with the franchise to walk away with an honor at the ceremony, as former U.S. judge Demi Lovato also took home Best Female Artist and Favorite Road Trip Song for “Made in the USA.” One Direction, who first found fame thanks to the British version of the show, also won Best Music Group.
The strength of these “X Factor” acts is that not only are the artists talented, but they have the right people to back them out and market them. Both One Direction and Fifth Harmony were catered to a teen market, and their challenge now is going to be to have their music naturally evolve over time in the same way that they and their fans do. This is where so many young acts struggle, and while One Direction started that movement with “Story of My Life,” Fifth Harmony hasn’t really had that opportunity yet. They have spent most of the year on a tour with Demi, and have not had a chance to really buckle down with more music for a lengthy period of time.
