‘The X Factor’ notes: See new videos from Ella Henderson, Rough Copy
Should Simon Cowell consider giving every “X Factor” artist the time to percolate and come up with great music? It’s certainly worked wonders from one of his former favorites in Ella Henderson.
Remember Ella? She was the young singer who didn’t even make the top five on her season, as she was shockingly eliminated before Rylan Clark. But, we’re willing to wager that her debut single “Ghost” is very good, and on the same level as what Union J put out. (These guys have had the best post-show career so far from this season.) She has been given time to craft a pop sound, and also distance herself from whatever persona she may have had on the show. This is genuine hit material here, and something that could do well even in America. The chorus is really what does it.
Rough Copy – Now, we turn to Rough Copy. Gary Barlow’s group was at one point a favorite to win this past season, thanks mostly to their harmonies and their unique spin on songs. So what do the guys have for you now? Well, it’s a song that sounds almost like anything that you could hear on the radio.
“Street Love” is a disappointing first effort for a single, mostly because it completely strips away what made these guys special: Their voices. They don’t need auto-tune. Some people do, but they don’t. Using it completely ruins their sounds, and turns this into yet another song that seems interested in capturing the moment rather than capturing what makes the artist or the group special.
Hopefully, the trio will find something better for their next effort.
