FXX to (seriously) marathon every episode of ‘The Simpsons’
There are crazy things to do to promote the launch of a show in syndication … and then there are insane things to do. We have a feeling that the following qualifies for “insane” and then some.
FXX announced today that when they acquire the rights to every season of “The Simpsons,” making them the only cable network to have them ever, they are going to literally spend a full 12 days marathoning the entire series. We’re talking 25 years of shows, laughs, and complaints from fans that the show was better whenever they started watching. The marathon will begin on August 21, and run right into Labor Day. There are over 550 episodes that will need to be aired.
The funny thing about this idea is that as crazy as it sounds, we actually feel like there is an audience out there who would watch this. It qualifies as “extreme” television viewing, much in the way that people go to state fairs and eat the ten-pound burger. You know that there is going to be one guy somewhere who tries to watch every episode and nearly kills themselves before falling asleep for two days. “The Simpsons” are funny, but come on now: You can get too much of a good thing.
Then again, let’s be real here for a second: What else does FXX really have to put on the air right now? “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” won’t be on until 2015, “Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell” was canceled ages ago, and we have a hard time feeling that other syndicated shows are going to suffer that much from not being on the air for 12 days. For a while when it first came out, FXX was “that channel we can’t get because my cable package thinks it’s soccer.”
