‘Chicago PD’ episode 11 review: Crime and politics

“Chicago PD” had an episode tonight that had quite a bit going on, in between undercover missions, confessions, and history lessons from the past.

Ironically, the thing that hurt this episode the most was simply the fact that it came after “Chicago Fire” last night, which had a particular strong, devastating hour of TV. After watching something as shocking as a possible suicide attempt, it’s hard to match that level of intensity.

As a matter of fact, the moment that took place here that we’ll remember the most took place in the final minutes, and was a testament to something that has become very much tried and true on many cop shows: Someone you despise will end up being set free, even if it is just to be used as bait for a larger case. We find this show most interesting when it deals with police politics, and wish that there was more of that instead of some of the typical cases that you see on other shows.

At least when it comes to catching one of the main culprits, we saw a different approach to being undercover than most other shows. There was nothing silly about watching two women have to act fairly lifeless for some very bad guys; it was about psychology, and making the criminals feel in power. It’s too bad that the “loose end” at the end of this case is what set up the bait situation.

We still feel like “Chicago PD” is a good show, but we’re not as attached to the characters or the story as we want to be. We understand, given that it took time with “Chicago Fire” as well; but given that we are near the end of the first season, that moment has to come eventually. Grade: B-.
