‘Dancing with the Stars’ 18: Maksim Chmerkovskiy, NeNe Leakes, and new controversy

HereFor a show that has a Mirrorball Trophy and also routine features contestants wearing sequins and hardly anything else, we are tremendously entertained by the amount of smack-talk and general controversy that happens during a season of “Dancing with the Stars.”

Earlier this year, we took fascination in how Sean Avery took umbridge with the show, claiming that it may have been in some way fixed in order to ensure that he and partner Karina Smirnoff were eliminated on the first night. You can read more about that at the link here, since today we’ve got two other conspiracies to discuss!

The brothers Chmerkovskiy vs. Julianne Hough – What does Julianne have against some of the show’s current pros? Last season, she complained that Mark Ballas tries to upstage his dance partners much of the time. Last night, she insinuated that Maks wasn’t giving his brother’s celebrity partner Danica McKellar his full effort.

Suffice it to see, Maks was none too pleased. Speaking (and cursing) to The Hollywood Reporter after the fact, he had the following message to pass along:

“The [bleep] that Julianne made up was nothing but exactly that. It was an invalid comment that had nothing to do with Danica’s performance, which was brilliant, because our dance was a disaster from a production standpoint.”

In the end, we imagine that Maks’ frown is going to be turned upside down by the end of this season, mostly because we are pretty sure that the winning dancer is on his team. This is a nice little way to bridge the gap to our next story.

Who’s upset about Meryl now? – It’s hard to hate either Merly David or Charlie White. They are Olympic heroes, and the two parties have come across like very nice people throughout the competition so far. But do that have an unfair advantage the size of the country where they won those gold medals? Probably. They’re both experienced performers, and while there may be differences between ice dancing and ballroom dancing, let’s not sit here and pretend that they’re night and day.

Maybe the word “upset” is a little much, but NeNe Leakes did at least acknowledge that the two being a part of the show did make it “uneven” during a chat on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” which you can see below. She also gave them a pass in the same interview because they are “sweet.”
