‘The Mentalist’ season 6, episode 14 preview: Simon Baker, ‘Grey Water,’ and oil
When we look at tonight’s new episode of “The Mentalist,” there is really only one way in which we view it: Something that started out for us to be pretty darn entertaining, but something that also did not really pop for us until the closing seconds. The CBI story is really what is the most intriguing part of this right now, since it makes you wonder whether or not there are remnants to the Red John case, even if the villain himself is dead. It’s also interesting that all of this is happening not that long after Patrick Jane is back in America.
Unfortunately, the promo below for next week’s “Grey Water” really does not allow for many opportunities to discuss any of that. Instead, what we have here is mostly just a tale about oil, Simon Baker’s character trying to instruct others to “trust their instincts” a la Peppy from “Star Fox 64,” and a case that feels on the surface to be standalone.
Luckily, the official synopsis is going to get you a little more insight when it comes to everything involved in this story:
“Jane and Fischer investigate a murder at an oil fracking site, while Rigsby and Van Pelt travel to Austin to help investigate suspects in the string of attacks on former CBI team members.”
We sound a little like a broken record on the subject (we’re well aware), but hopefully this will also be a story that gives us just a little more insight on Jane and Lisbon. When we don’t know what the future holds for characters, we tend to get a little anxious.

I want more Jane and Lisbon! I don’t like this Kim girl and having “not enough” of Lisbon doesn’t make me feel better.

First, let me say that I am a HUGE fan of The Mentalist. Fans wished for different things to happen after the Red John capture- explanations for unanswered questions, to know how Jane would be after he killed Red John, a deepening or at least some explanation of Jane and Lisbon’s relationship, a girlfriend for Cho. I believe Bruno Heller had a different take on things. Its seems to me that Bruno has two mistresses to serve- hardcore fan wishes and a million-dollar TV network. Hardcore fans wants details like I mentioned before but they are a smaller part of the show’s audience. The Mentalist audience, at least in America, is made up of older viewers who like the tried and true police procedural and a somewhat predictable story, like NCIS or CSI. Many fans complained about the Red John story–see the show’s Facebook page for examples–and wanted it to end and “go back to Jane solving crimes”. So Bruno is faced with a dilemma, give the fans what they want or please the network. It seems that now he is pleasing the network after giving fans an early conclusion to the Red John saga perhaps in a effort to get renewed. Hopefully a renewal happens and fans will get what they are hoping to see, whatever that may be.

More on screen time between Jane and Lisbon, and Jane taking more interest on who is hunting down the old CBI agents and not waiting until Grace is kidnapped to get involved. These are people he used to work with, and damn it, they helped him in his quest for Red John a time or two. Surely Jane didn’t forget about that.
