‘Call the Midwife’ season 3, episode 6 review: Will Shelagh and Dr. Turner adopt?
Going into tonight’s new episode of “Call the Midwife,” we had many questions. For example, were we going to be seeing any more of Jenny Lee, and would we continue to miss her? In the absence of Jessica Raine, we do have to say that the show is doing an admirable job of having enough other storylines to keep things interesting. (For those of you who do love Jenny, though, good news will be coming up soon.)
What was interesting about this episode in particular is that for the vast majority of it, the case at the center of the episode actually did not have that much at all to do with a birth. Instead, it was more about caring for Mr. Glennon, who became extremely ill thanks to something that he may have suffered from while at a prison camp in Burma. Self-blame and pain became a result of this, as of course there were a bevy of people interested in trying to take responsibility for these actions. Luckily, he appears to be on the mend.
While all this was transpiring Shelagh and Dr. Turner were taking their own quick look at their future, and trying to figure out whether or not another child was going to be a part of it. When she expressed an interest in adoption, her interest became his interest, and this appears to be more and more something that could happen in the future. Timothy is interested … but then there was a problem that Patrick had with most of the forms. What is our take on this? Clearly, the man has something in his past that he doesn’t want either the agency (or his wife) to find out.
Also, Trixie had herself one of the worse dates ever with the vicar, and this is something that could still with her for a while. As if this wasn’t bad enough, her relationship with Jenny’s replacement Patsy at Nonnatus was not going particular well as they tried to care for Glennon.
In the end, we cannot say that this was the best episode, mostly because it didn’t really have anything that stands out to the point where we will remember it in the long-term. But, there was still a particular emotional moment at the end that produced that all-familiar “Call the Midwife” sadness. Grade: B-.
