‘Ravenswood’ creator reacts to show’s sudden cancellation after one season

Over the past four years, “Pretty Little Liars” fans have been gifted with something pretty outstanding: An ABC Family series that not only has been given long seasons, but has never faced any real danger of getting unceremoniously sent out to pasture. We’re not necessarily suggesting that the network is an evil empire (they are running a business), but what happened at times to shows like “Bunheads” and “Make It or Break It” demonstrates that they are not willing to continue a series, even if there is a cliffhanger or it has been around a while, if it does not meet a certain performance threshold.

So to see “Ravenswood” canceled after ten episodes, and with a cliffhanger, no less, is not something that particularly shocks us. It is still one of the first bits of bad news that “Pretty Little Liars” fans have received, though, and that may make it sting a little bit more.

For the first time since the news first broke late Friday, show creator Marlene King took to Twitter and at least expressed gratitude for getting the opportunity to tell the stories in the first place:

“Thanks so much for all of your support. We had fun. We grew our family. We told our story. Well at least part of it. Love you guys. Xo”

We imagine that when you are a showrunner and something like this happens, your feelings have to be somewhat mixed. On one side of the coin, you may have at least a little bit of gratitude for getting the show to be made in the first place, which is not an easy thing to do in the first place. At the same time, you want to get a chance to tell all of your story, and then something gets in the way of that happening.

At least King has another series, and hopefully she can find a way to use “Pretty Little Liars” to bring at least some resolution to some of the stories over there.
