‘Hart of Dixie,’ ‘The Carrie Diaries,’ ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ and ‘Tomorrow People’ firmly on the bubble

Today’s big news from The CW certainly creates an interesting situation for most of the shows that we are going to talk about within the span of this article. From one vantage point, it is easy to be excited about shows like “Reign,” “Supernatural,” and others that were just renewed for another season.

However, the renewal announcement also created what is definitely an awkward situation for the other shows that the network has on the air. We are talking of course here about “Hart of Dixie,” “The Carrie Diaries,” “The Tomorrow People,” and “Beauty and the Beast.” Out of these four shows, at least one of them is probably going to be canceled, and maybe more than that. The network has been lucky in that none of their new shows this year were enormous flops, and that makes the home stretch here a little more interesting.

What we are going to do now is a little exercise in trying to figure out where the network’s head is at. Below, you can see just where we have ranked all of these four shows in order from most-likely to least-likely to be renewed for another season.

1. “Hart of Dixie” – While it hit a series low this week, it was thanks to the Olympics. Given that the show is just a year away from getting the key 88-episode syndication threshold, we would be stunned to see it canceled. If nothing else, we imagine a shortened final season like “Nikita,” where the story can be wrapped.

2. “The Carrie Diaries” – The ratings are not the best of this group (they may average out to even be the worst), but there is one thing to remember here: The show comes on Friday nights. Given that, the show proved this season that it can keep its audience together. It also does well in digital and DVR viewing, which are measures The CW looks at.

3. “The Tomorrow People” – Out of this group, the show averages the best numbers in the 18-49 demographic … but how much of that is thanks to the lead-in? We are going to see the true mettle of the Robbie Amell series later this spring, where it is moved to a new night where that benefit is no longer there.

4. “Beauty and the Beast” – We like the show and enjoy covering it, but the ratings just aren’t good on a Monday. It’s also not near syndication, and cannot make the excuse of it being on a night where nobody watches TV. It will take either a Hail Mary or a gesture of good will to be renewed.
