‘Call the Midwife’ season 3, episode 4 spoilers: Stephen McGann teases more struggle
There are times when “Call the Midwife” can be seen as a positive, uplifting show; then, there are also times in which the show can be really be viewed as something rather dark and difficult to watch. Already this season, there have been two stories in particular about women who are forced to suffer through such problems as poverty, abusive relationships, and even imprisonment while also trying to welcome children into the world.
But what we are here to talk about further is the story of Dr. Turner and Shelagh, a couple who already found each other under unusual circumstances. Shelagh left her position as a nun in order to find love, and that is something we discussed last week prior to the third episode of the show. But, we are here today to get a reminder from the other side of the coin that this couple still has their work cut out for them.
Speaking per the Daily Mail, Stephen McGann teases that the problems for his character and Shelagh are far from over now that they are together, but there is a part of that he can relate to. One of the reasons why? He relates it to he and his wife’s own struggle to have a child, and how that ended up working out far differently than he expected:
“Happily-ever-afters don’t always happen in real life, and they don’t in Call The Midwife either. So are Dr Turner and Shelagh going to skip merrily into their fairy castle? Of course not. One of her dreams when she left the convent to get married was to become a mother, and suddenly she has to re-think that. It was the same for me and Heidi … We found having a baby was more difficult than we thought. My mum managed to have five [Stephen has three brothers, all actors, and a scientist sister], but when you look into how many things need to be right for it to happen it’s amazing anyone gets there.”
Of course, we are going to have even more discussion of this and other subjects when we present our full review of “Call the Midwife” later this afternoon.
